Looking for a DVR that i can purchase and manually program it as i do with my vcr. Is this service only available through a subscription service such as Tivo?

    Whats the point?
The real secret to DVR’s is the program guide. The ability to say “Record YYY” and the computer inside detects night changes, dual episodes, you can search.
Then instead of mysterious “file1″, “file2″, “file3″ – on the recorded guide – you get titles, dates, etc.
    But …
Search for “DTVPal” I believe it is a DTV DVR box that does not require a subscription from Dish Network. (I could be wrong – but thats what the little blurb implied.)

Afraid it might just be. You are basically tapping into a cable services scheduling database to get the information so you’d have to be a subscriber

You can get a DVD recorder, some have an HDD.
You can build a PC based DVR.
