Very Eхсеllеnt Picture Quality, A Vital Feature Set, Poor Quality Control, November 9, 2011

Thе LG LED LCD TV іѕ a hοnеѕtlу vital set wіth very ехсеllеnt picture quality, bυt ѕοmе unfortunate quality control problems.

Thе LG іѕ very simple looking іn іtѕ design. It hаѕ a piano black bezel аnd a swiveling base thаt іѕ аlѕο done іn piano black. Thеrе іѕ a small piece οf opaque gray fаkе trim thаt runs along thе bottom аnd a very discreet LG logo οn thе TV. On thе bottom οf thе set аrе thе stereo speakers. Thе set іѕ very thin аnd іѕ аbουt 1.75″ аt іtѕ thickest раrt, nοt including thе base. Thе set іѕ very light іn weight аnd simple tο gο fοr one person. Construction quality аnd equipment аrе ехсеllеnt, bυt thе swivel base allows thе TV tο gο a few degrees іn еіthеr direction easily. I find thіѕ quite annoying аѕ thе swivel base οn mу two Panasonic flat screen TVs hаνе nο play аt аll.

Thе οnlу assembly required іѕ tο attach thе swivel stand, іf desired, аnd thаt wаѕ a very simple procedure thаt I wаѕ аblе tο dο fοr myself аnd took nο more thаn 5 minutes.

On thе left hand side οf thе set frοm thе adjoin, hidden behind thе bezel, аrе thе Power, Menu, Input, Channel аnd Volume buttons along wіth 1 USB port аnd 2 HDMI ports. One thе back left hand side οf thе set аrе 1 RGB PC, 1 Composite οr Component (іt’s еіthеr used fοr one οr thе οthеr, nοt both), 1 digital аnd 1 analog audio out, 1 RF cable аnd 1 HDMI port.

Using thе set іѕ very simple. Thе οn-screen menu system аnd thе remote аrе both simple tο υѕе. Feature wise thе set offers аnd few different picture presets (wіth individual setting saved fοr each input), a sleep аnd schedule timer, closed captioning аnd thе ability tο view photos οn a USB jump drive. One feature I really lіkе іѕ thе ability tο turn οff thе screen bυt still hear thе audio, whісh іѕ nice іf уου lіkе tο fall asleep tο thе sound οf thе TV, bυt thе screen’s light bothers уου. Thе set dοеѕ nοt hаνе 3-D capability, nοr dοеѕ іt hаνе access tο аnу streaming web air force such аѕ Pandora, Netflix, οr Amazon Video On Demand. Alѕο, thеrе іѕ οnlу a vital printed owner’s manual included wіth thе TV. If уου want thе detailed manual уου hаνе tο view thе PDF οn thе included CD.

Picture quality іѕ thе highlight οf thіѕ reasonably priced LED set аnd tο bе sure thе high definition picture іѕ astute аnd clear wіth nice affect, smooth motion, аnd detailed brіght scenes (I gеt mу HD picture bу hooking thе TV directly tο mу cable using thе RF jack). Thе SD picture looks ехсеllеnt аѕ well, bυt іt іѕ a lot softer thаn thе HD picture, аѕ expected. Whеrе picture quality falters, bυt, іѕ іn thе shadows аnd during dаrk scenes. Compared tο mу 50″ 3-D Panasonic plasma thе darker sections οf thе LG’s picture lack contrast аnd detail. Watching high definition TV I wаѕ аblе tο compare thе picture οn thе two sets directly. In one scene whеrе thе actor wаѕ standing іn adjoin οf a black wall wіth a floral pattern іn a slightly lighter shade οf black I wаѕ аblе tο easily mаkе out thе pattern οn thе Panasonic Plasma, bυt οn thе LG LCD thе wall wаѕ a solid black. Fοr аn LCD TV thе picture іѕ fаntаѕtіс, bυt fοr rіght videophiles a high-еnd plasma set іѕ a better bet. Fοr reference I hаνе thе picture settings οn thе LG set аѕ follows; Backlight: 90, Contrast: 85, Brightness: 48, Sharpness: 35, Affect: 40, Tint: R4, Affect Temperature: Medium, Gamma: Medium, аnd аll thе οthеr adjustments set tο οff.

Another area whеrе thе LG disappoints іѕ іn іtѕ viewing angle. If уου sit directly іn adjoin οf thе TV іt hаѕ fаntаѕtіс contrast аnd saturation, bυt whеn уου initiation tο gο a couple οf feet οff center thе contrast аnd saturation drop dramatically аnd thе picture ѕtаrtѕ tο wash out. Thе effect іѕ more dramatic thе closer уου аrе tο thе TV, ѕіnсе уουr viewing angles аrе more acute. Compared tο mу plasma, аnd even tο аn older Panasonic 32″ LCD, thе LG hаѕ a very narrow viewing angle. I wіll admit thаt thе LG іѕ much better thаn a 26″ Astute LCD I used tο hаνе іn thіѕ regard. Still, іf уουr viewing area іѕ arranged іn such a manner thаt people wіll bе аt аn extreme angle frοm thе adjoin οf thе set, уου mіght want tο look іntο a plasma, οr аn LCD wіth a wider viewing angle.

Sound quality іѕ ехсеllеnt, wіth plenty οf volume tο fill a room, bυt tο gеt thе rіght hυgе screen experience уου′ll want tο hook thе set up tο a surround sound system.

Thе last, аnd mοѕt vital business I want tο mention аbουt thе LG іѕ thаt thеrе аrе two small specks οf fаkе stuck behind thе screen. Thеу аrе both black fаkе triangular shaped slivers. One іѕ аbουt thе size οf a pixel аnd barely noticeable, аnd thе οthеr іѕ аbουt three pixels long, аnd depending hοw ассυrаtе уου аrе tο thе TV, саn bе picked out without tοο much dіѕtrеѕѕ. Thеу аrе a manufacturing defect аnd саnnοt bе removed without ruining thе screen. Pushing the "home" button brings up selections for changing picture/audio/parental/time/channel settings etc. These sub-menus are easy to navigate thanks to pictures and large text. While the organization of the menus are great, the breadth of the options available is disappointing.<br/><br/>==Picture== <br/>The picture on most LCD's is rather good these days. The 42LV4400 ranks right up there with any mid-range HDTV. The blacks could be much better, but with some good tweaking in the regular menu settings, you can achieve fairly decent color accuracy and 'pop' (the sensation of depth and realism). As with most LCD's, the brightness is more than abundant, making it a good TV for any room. It also has a matte finish, which makes it difficult to see reflections.<br/><br/>==Aesthetics== <br/>The bezel of the TV is 1" on top and sides but almost 3" on the bottom. The bezel and stand are a high-gloss black with very simple contours and slightly rounded edges. Overall, it looks plain but also attractively understated. It would be a good choice for a professional environment as well as a home.<br/><br/>==Build== <br/>The LG 42LV4400 is fairly light, making it easy to setup by oneself. The stand seems sturdy enough, but a little more weight would have been comforting. The stand doesn't offer any tilt and doesn't swivel too well. The inputs are...streamlined: there is one component input and no composite inputs besides; no dvi. The three HDMI inputs are ample though and the USB port is a good addition. The buttons on the TV are not in the most convenient place, being recessed on the side by 2.5". The buttons feel cheap, but are responsive. Most people will use the remote anyway, which is more of the same. The remote feels cheap as well, but looks okay and works fine. Since there aren't a ton of features on this TV, the remote is simple enough. There is no ethernet nor wi-fi.<br/><br/>==Motion Handling== <br/>One option I always look for right away is smoothing out motion (sometimes separated into blur and judder). Most LCD's have issues producing clear, smooth, flowing video of motion. This is a major disadvantage vs. plasma, which does not suffer the same problem. The refresh rates (120Hz or 240Hz instead of 60Hz) are used to adjust the way your eyes see the motion on the television. In the best TV sets, the video is processed so that there is no stuttering and also no "Soap Opera Effect," a problem introduced when there is too much processing that can make any video look unnaturally smooth as the processing tries to correct the normal variations in speed that us living things tend to do so much when we move about. Unfortunately, with the 42LV4400, you have almost no control over the motion handling, aside from selecting a picture mode (Cinema, Game, Sport, etc). In Game mode, the motion handling is turned off to reduce input lag. In Sport mode, it is turned all the way up, so you can see a football gliding from the quarterback to receiver without too much choppiness.<br/><br/>==Calibration== <br/>If you plan to calibrate this TV yourself, you'll be sorely disappointed. My older 42LH90 has settings for 10-point IRE gray scale and color/tint settings for primary and secondary colors. Such features as those may only interest videophiles with a spectrometer at their disposal, but the 42LV4400 completely lacks the ability to adjust the gray scale. Most other TV's I've come across in the last few years at least have a 2-point IRE gray scale adjustment. I assume more calibration settings are available in the service menu, but I haven't found how to access that, despite reading through the manual on the included CD.<br/><br/>==Other Features== <br/>The picture menu lacks some important settings, but does let you create a fairly convincing picture overall. See the end of the review for my settings (though every panel is different). Parental controls are well laid out. The Game mode seems to work well enough to play FPS, though a game like Rock Band may still need some adjustment in-game. Sound is okay, but I'd recommend using external speakers with any TV. Unfortunately, the USB access will only let you view pictures. You can't view movies or listen to music from the USB port like you can on some other LG models. Also, I did run into a peculiar issue where this TV failed to input any signal from my DVDO video filter. Both functioned normally when paired with other devices.<br/><br/>==Conclusion== <br/>The 42LV4400 lacks the features necessary to be considered a high-end TV, but it is capable of producing an excellent picture that will rival any mid-range TV. The stores either did not carry the exact battery type or wanted over $6 per battery. When I checked Amazon, the Energizer battery ECR2025 was available for less than $4 for two. I was concerned if ECR2025 was the same as CR2025; I took a chance, and they turned out to be the same, so the E probably just stands for Energizer. The batteries have been working fine because the remotes work fine. This was the best deal for this battery. Delivery was free because I bought the batteries along with something else from Amazon. I went to many stores, from Sharper Image to Best Buy to Circuit City to Radio Shack and a few online spots to find the CR2025 batteries for my clock radio remote and air conditioner remote. The stores either did not carry the exact battery type or wanted over $6 per battery. When I checked Amazon, the Energizer battery ECR2025 was unfilled for less than $4 for two. I was concerned if ECR2025 was the same as CR2025; I took a chance, and they turned out to be the same, so the E probably just stands for Energizer. The batteries have been working fine since the remotes work fine. This was the best deal for this battery. Delivery was free since I bought the batteries along with something else from Amazon. Amazon seems to carry many things with brilliant prices, and the free delivery is fantastic.

I am not one to typically write a review of a product (this is my first)… but the Vado made me do it! After having spent time with the Flip HD cam, i was ready to give up on the mini/micro HD market, since the quality (sound and video) was so poor. I assumed that would be the case for all similar products. But a friend convinced me to give the Vado a shot, and I was immediately impressed. I like the fact that it takes both static pictures and video. This is a fantastic fix for all of the woes of packing massive equipment and accessories to memorialize trips and vacations. Now you only have to have room in your pocket. And the quality is outstanding! I am certainly a fan, and am going to look into other products that Creative Labs develops… since we should all experience this type of happiness with all of our electronics.

Years ago, I took many home movies on film with 8mm silent, Super-8 silent, and Super-8 sound being the types I used, and then later I went to a JVC GR-SZ9 Super VHS camcorder. However, several years ago, I lost interest in video tape and I stopped taking home movies. <br/><br/>Fast forward to now: we have a granddaughter of whom we'd like to have some videos; I had been investigating various camcorders but had not yet made a decision. <br/><br/>Amazon Vine, with this <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002P3N1J2" target="_top">Creative Labs Vado HD 3rd Generation Pocket Video Camcorder, 120 Minutes (Black) - NEWEST MODEL</a>, made it for me. <br/><br/>I received the unit yesterday and, per the instructions, I charged the battery. Now the instruction say to insert the battery into the camcorder and attach the camcorder to a USB port on your computer. I wanted to see if there was an alternate method of charging the battery - and there is! You need only attach the camcorder (with the battery inserted) to a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002657BSG" target="_top">Creative Labs Battery Charger for Vado and Vado HD Camcorders</a> or similar and plug the adapter into a wall socket. This is quite advantageous. <br/><br/>Amazon offers a spare battery [<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002653KNQ" target="_top">Creative Labs Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery for Vado HD Camcorder</a>] and external chargers, one for the home and one for the car [<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001SHNEF2" target="_top">Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder 6 Feet USB Extention Cable, Car Charger, Travel Charger</a>], thereby offering the option of having two batteries - using one while keeping the other one charged. That will be quite a convenience and you'll never run out of power. Amazon also offers several carrying cases for this unit (one is even waterproof), including this <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001I44YCC" target="_top">Creative Labs Vado VF0570APS Pocket Video Camera Mesh Pouch (Silver)</a>, the one I bought. The prices for these accessories, as well as several other useful accessories offered by Amazon, are quite reasonable. <br/><br/>I want to emphasize the fact that the battery is easily removable and replaceable. This is a rare thing in this age of built-in non-replaceable (except by the factory at a very high price) batteries and, for me, is a distinct advantage. <br/><br/>I was a bit worried that the camcorder might not work with my computer; it is configured to work with either Windows (XP SP2, Vista, or 7) as well as Mac - but I use the Ubuntu Linux operating system on my computer. <br/><br/>I need not have worried. The camcorder works perfectly in conjunction with my computer and it will obviously work well with yours, regardless of your operating system. And transferring a video or picture file from the unit to your computer is a snap! <br/><br/>Thus far I have had only enough time to try the cam minimally. I have tried all three video settings - HD+ and HD (both are configured to produce MP4 files with AAC+ sound and the video in both is 1280 x 720) and VGA, which also produces MP4/AAC+ files with the video is formatted at 640 x 480 (ideal for e-mailing and for posting to YouTube, etc.). I did send via e-mail a VGA video [33 seconds, 8.9 MB] to my son (who lives across the country in California) and he said the video was fine - though there was some "snow" in the picture (I had sent him a video of our latest snowstorm! ... ;-) ... just to bring back to him some "fond memories" - he always hated shoveling snow!). <br/><br/>The picture quality in all three settings is excellent. (My son was actually quite amazed at the quality of the video I had sent him - and remember that this was taken at VGA, the lowest quality setting.) I believe that any purchaser will be surprised and VERY pleased with the results this camcorder supplies. Offered to me for free by Amazon Vine, this is the first such product I have ever owned. Years ago, I took many home movies on film with 8mm silent, Super-8 silent, and Super-8 sound being the types I used, and then later I went to a JVC GR-SZ9 Super VHS camcorder. But, numerous years ago, I lost interest in video tape and I stopped taking home movies.

Quick forward to now: we have a granddaughter of whom we’d like to have some videos; I had been investigating various camcorders but had not yet made a choice.

Amazon Vine, with this Creative Labs Vado HD 3rd Generation Pocket Video Camcorder, 120 Minutes (Black) – NEWEST MODEL, made it for me.

I received the unit yesterday and, per the instructions, I charged the battery. Now the instruction say to insert the battery into the camcorder and attach the camcorder to a USB port on your computer. I wanted to see if there was an alternate method of charging the battery – and there is! You need only attach the camcorder (with the battery inserted) to a Creative Labs Battery Charger for Vado and Vado HD Camcorders or similar and plug the adapter into a wall socket. This is quite advantageous.

Amazon offers a spare battery [Creative Labs Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery for Vado HD Camcorder] and external chargers, one for the home and one for the car [Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder 6 Feet USB Extention Cable, Car Charger, Travel Charger], thereby offering the option of having two batteries – using one while keeping the other one charged. That will be quite a convenience and you’ll never run out of power. Amazon also offers numerous carrying cases for this unit (one is even waterproof), including this Creative Labs Vado VF0570APS Pocket Video Camera Mesh Pouch (Silver), the one I bought. The prices for these accessories, as well as numerous other useful accessories offered by Amazon, are quite reasonable.

I want to emphasize the fact that the battery is easily removable and replaceable. This is a rare business in this age of built-in non-replaceable (except by the factory at a very high fee) batteries and, for me, is a distinct advantage.

I was a bit worried that the camcorder might not work with my computer; it is configured to work with either Windows (XP SP2, Outlook, or 7) as well as Mac – but I use the Ubuntu Linux operating system on my computer.

I need not have worried. The camcorder works perfectly in conjunction with my computer and it will obviously work well with yours, regardless of your operating system. And transferring a video or picture file from the unit to your computer is a snap!

Thus far I have had only enough time to try the cam minimally. I have tried all three video settings – HD+ and HD (both are configured to produce MP4 files with AAC+ sound and the video in both is 1280 x 720) and VGA, which also produces MP4/AAC+ files with the video is formatted at 640 x 480 (ideal for e-mailing and for posting to YouTube, etc.). I did send via e-mail a VGA video [33 seconds, 8.9 MB] to my son (who lives across the country in California) and he said the video was fine – though there was some “snow” in the picture (I had sent him a video of our latest snow flurry! … … just to bring back to him some “fond memories” – he always despised shoveling snow!).

The picture quality in all three settings is brilliant. (My son was really quite amazed at the quality of the video I had sent him – and remember that this was taken at VGA, the lowest quality setting.) I believe that any purchaser will be surprised and VERY pleased with the results this camcorder supplies. I am!

And the buttons that were previously neatly located and easy to press and navigate are now a touch-sensitive surface that you can easily brush (thus press) and not ever realize it. Still the camera does not have optical zoom (understandable for its size), still no image stabilization (still ok since at that price range, most digital-IS does nothing and optics take space) but still no 60fps or 1080p settings much un-like most of its competition. In addition, the memory is now cut in half and there is no way to add more! <br/><br/>The addition of motion detection is a 'fun' feature, but i don't see when mainstream users would take advantage of that. <br/>Personally i would -much- rather see a timelapse feature (like the Samsung pocket cameras have), which is great for sky-scapes. <br/>Alternatively, the ability to double as a web camera (like the Sony Webbie) would also be good and perhaps useful. <br/>The 3rd gen also takes pictures, which (even at 1280x720) is a minor plus due to their low quality and the fact that you can always take frames out of video files and use them as pictures - that's what the Vado's software does anyway. <br/><br/>The manual light-adjusting setting works pretty fine, but i always have to be careful not to touch the buttons and activate them by accident. <br/><br/>Color-wise, the 3rg gen seems closer to reality, without over-saturating reds/greens that much. As a result the video looks more natural but also not as lively or vivid as the 2nd gen. I guess that is a matter of personal preference. <br/><br/>When it comes to sound, the 3rd gen seems slightly louder, but it also comes with an external mic input for more demanding users or situations. I think that's a great addition over the previous model. <br/><br/>Finally, when it comes to the crispness of each frame of the film, some was unfortunately lost. This is sad, because the previous Vado still has the sharpest video-frames i have seen coming out of any pocket size camera i have ever used (which includes Sony, Kodak, Samsung, and Aiptek). Vado is my favorite brand when it comes to pocket size “HD” camcorders, even at 720p and 30 fps the 2nd generation was one of my favorite for its crisp frames, very wide lens, and affect contrast. The 3rd gen. Vado HD has half the reminiscence (4GB) and as such can only confirmation 1 hour of HD+ footage (as opposed to 2 hrs with the 2nd gen). And it still comes with no external reminiscence slot. The nice matte, scratch resistant and fingerprint free end is now gone. And the buttons that were previously neatly located and simple to push and navigate are now a touch-sensitive surface that you can easily brush (thus push) and not ever realize it. The addition of motion detection is a ‘fun’ feature, but i don’t see when mainstream users would take advantage of that.
Personally i would -much- rather see a timelapse feature (like the Samsung pocket cameras have), which is fantastic for sky-scapes.
Alternatively, the ability to double as a web camera (like the Sony Webbie) would also be excellent and perhaps useful.
The 3rd gen also takes pictures, which (even at 1280×720) is a minor plus due to their low quality and the fact that you can always take frames out of video files and use them as pictures – that’s what the Vado’s software does anyway.

The manual light-adjusting setting works sweet fine, but i always have to be careful not to touch the buttons and activate them by accident.

Affect-wise, the 3rg gen seems closer to actuality, without over-saturating reds/greens that much. As a result the video looks more natural but also not as lively or vivid as the 2nd gen. I guess that is a matter of personal preference.

When it comes to sound, the 3rd gen seems slightly louder, but it also comes with an external mic input for more demanding users or situations. I reckon that’s a fantastic addition over the previous model.

Finally, when it comes to the crispness of each frame of the film, some was unfortunately lost. This is sad, since the previous Vado still has the sharpest video-frames i have seen coming out of any pocket size camera i have ever used (which includes Sony, Kodak, Samsung, and Aiptek). I have a lot of side-by-side footage comparing the Sony, Samsung, and both versions of the Vado HD, it is all on YouTube, if you are interested, let me know.

So, overall, we had a sweet fantastic 2nd gen. Vado HD.. and instead of adding a much needed reminiscence card slot, and perhaps adding a affect option (i.e. vivid vs. normal) to give the user a change to point out whether high affect saturation is desired or not, or maybe add a 60fps or 1080p setting.. we got a 4GB / 1 hour / glossy / colorful camera that can detect motion!!

My suggestions to Creative: Drop the internal reminiscence all together (if some is needed for usb connection/drivers/codec/etc, just use that much), ADD a micro-SD reminiscence card reader, add manual controls for saturation/contrast/light, keep the external mic and HDMI out, keep the replaceable battery, and do not lower the currently high data-rate of more than 4Mbps @ HD and more than 8Mbps @ HD+ (which is fantastic to be able to confirmation at these high bit rates – and imo larger files with quality are better than small useless ones, we can always compress later)

I normally use a Nikon D50 which takes fantastic photos, Im no professional but really delight in taking pictures of my toddler. Well he broke my Nikon and I sent to see if it could be fixed but wanted to point and shoot since they come in really handy! I reviewed what felt like a million cameras, I touched them and felt them and shot pictures with them and despised every single one!
