When you own an HDTV and it has a digital tuner built-in, then without having to pay exorbitant monthly fees for subscription you will be able to receive high definition programming to a satellite or local cable mega-conglomerate.

If your HDTV is hooked up to an external high-def tuner, this will also work to receive over the air broadcasts in high-def that are free. Thus, now all what you need is an HDTV antenna and connect them!

Just be careful though, you will only receive the high def broadcasts from major networks, even if you have all of the above, including the HDTV antenna, such as PBS, Fox, CBS, NBC and ABC. However, you will only receive those high def broadcasts unless you are in an area where such broadcasts are severely blocked or you’re too far away from a broadcast tower.

The great things is that any reasonably priced indoor antenna should do, and providing there is not too much interference from tall buildings, as long as you are near a broadcast tower. Thus, you might try an indoor model first, prior to purchasing an outdoor HDTV antenna.

Basically, in order to get your entire local stations, you will need to purchase an outdoor HDTV antenna over the air without suffering dropouts. Whether or not you live in an apartment or even a house, putting such an antenna on the roof is best.

Be aware that the FCC has created an “Over-the-Air Reception Devices Rule”, so you should aware to encounter problems from a landlord or board that should help you overcome any prohibitions against installation of an HDTV antenna.

If your HDTV combined with an antenna, chances are very good that will be all that you need. Just for notation, all HDTVs sold since March 2007 had to include built-in ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) tuners.

The old fashioned rabbit ears may even work along with your HDTV, even if you live near to a broadcast tower. So, you may wish to try it out if you still have one of those with the UHF/VHF capabilities, before you bother purchasing a dedicated HD antenna.

At last, you might also speak with your neighbors who have an antenna on their roof, before you purchase your HDTV antenna. This will let you know how clearly the signal comes in and how happy they are with their new antenna.
