VIXIA HD Camcorders
CES 2009: Canon Showcases Five New VIXIA HD Camcorders

Given the very large number of new models, we’ll divide this article into two different sections, dealing first with the VIXIA models and then with the standard-definition versions.
Other features shared by some of these devices are the Canon Face Detection Technology (up to 35 faces can be detected automatically, and nine detection frames can be displayed at one time, while users can also track a specific face), as well as Instant AutoFocus, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization and 24Mbps Recording.
The first two HD camcorders in Canon’s fresh lineup are the VIXIA HF S10 and VIXIA HF S100 flash memory camcorders, which come equipped with the new DIGIC DV III Image Processor, an 8.59 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor, Genuine Canon Face Detection Technology, an advanced Auto Exposure system and Video Snapshot and Dual Shot Modes. The main difference between the two is the fact that the VIXIA HF S10 offers the option of recording video to a 32GB internal Flash drive or directly to an SDHC memory card, while the VIXIA HF S100 records to an SDHC memory card only.
Next in line come the VIXIA HF20 and VIXIA HF200 flash memory camcorders, which are slightly downgraded versions of the HF S10 and HF S100, the main difference being the image sensor, which only sports 3.89 megapixels. Another feature worth mentioning about these VIXIAs is the Canon 15x HD Video Lens.
The last VIXIA HD camcorder introduced by Canon is the HV40 HDV, a successor to the HV30, whose main features include 10x HD Video Lens and 2.96 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor, as well as the possibility to record video directly in native 24p Mode.
Canon’s new standard-definition camcorders
Besides all of the HD cameras mentioned above, Canon has also released no less than six different standard-definition cameras, designed especially for those people who don’t own a HDTV. The first three models are the FS22, FS21 and FS200 flash memory camcorders, which feature a very compact form factor. The DC420 and DC410 models, on the other hand, record video directly to DVDs and provide a 48x (or 41x, respectively) zoom level, a DIGIC DV II image processor and widescreen recording. The last model announced by Canon at this year’s CES is the ZR960 MiniDV camcorder, designed for those people who still use MiniDV tapes, and providing a 41 x zoom, as well as a microphone terminal for enhanced audio control.
